Metals

Steel, aluminium, ferroalloys and metal processing. Danfoss builds the drive, power conversion, thermal and automation technologies. Danfoss PowerNEU engineers, combines, executes and supports them across the plant, from raw material handling to the finishing line.

The plant map below walks the process stage by stage: the rotating assets involved, where drives, thermal and electrification opportunities sit, what a retrofit looks like, and where DPN's own engineering scope begins and ends.

What metals plants ask of their drives.

Four priorities come up in almost every steel and metals conversation. We engineer around them from the first application study.

01

Maximize uptime

Continuous production in heat, dust, vibration and heavy loads, with fewer unplanned stops and less maintenance.

02

Process stability and quality

Precise speed and torque control from the electric arc furnace to the rolling mill, for consistent product quality and less scrap.

03

Decarbonization and green steel

Energy-efficient drives, regenerative braking energy recovery and support for electric arc furnace and renewable-powered routes.

04

Safety and competency

Safety functions built into the drive, backed by application support and training for plant teams.

Drives that suit a steel plant, and a spares shelf that stays small.

What Danfoss drives bring to the hardest environments in the plant, and what that means for engineering and spares.

Heat, dust and altitude

Back-channel cooling is standard above 90 kW and can cut the need for external cooling by up to 90%. Rated for ambient temperatures from -25 to +50 degrees C, extendable to 60 degrees C with derating, and up to 1,000 m without derating (4,400 m with derating).

Protection and coating

Enclosure ratings from IP00 to IP66 depending on frame, with IP66 up to 90 kW and IP54 above. Coated circuit boards to class C3, with class C4 on request, for aggressive atmospheres.

One platform, fewer spares

A shared platform with a unified operating design and parameter structure lets the same drive serve conveyors, fans and more, so plants stock fewer unique parts and maintenance gets simpler.

Clean power and open communication

Low-harmonic drives can be paralleled for large motors, with built-in redundancy, alongside active and passive filters. Fieldbus support includes PROFIBUS, PROFINET, Modbus, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, POWERLINK, DeviceNet, CANopen and OPC UA.

Your drives already measure the signals that predict most failures.

Condition-based monitoring uses data the drive already has, so early warnings reach maintenance teams without adding sensors on most assets.

Motor stator winding

Stator winding monitoring

Analyses the motor current signature to detect winding damage early, before it becomes a burnout. No external sensors required.

Pumps and motors on a plant skid

Vibration monitoring

An external 4 to 20 mA sensor feeds the drive, which correlates vibration with motor speed to flag unbalance, misalignment, looseness and mechanical resonance.

Industrial generator and drive-driven equipment

Load envelope

The drive learns the normal load curve of the application and flags moves above or below it, such as pump wear, fouling, clogged filters, leaks or machine friction.

From drive data to a maintenance decision in four steps

1. Assess. A site assessment of installed drives, lifecycle status, criticality and risk, with a mitigation plan.

2. Connect. An edge IoT gateway links drives to cloud or on-premise monitoring.

3. Monitor. Live KPIs, alarms and events, fault history, automatic daily parameter backup and condition-based dashboards.

4. Act. Maintenance planned on actual usage and load, with a spares plan and expert troubleshooting.

Start with the critical drives in one area, build the baseline, then extend plant-wide.
